The FARMINGDALE PUBLIC LIBRARY, serving the residents of U.F.S.D. #22, has as it's primary mission: 

1. Enhancing the cultural, recreational and educational needs of all the community by serving  as a center for print and non print materials; 

2. Facilitating access to information and knowledge through cooperation with other libraries and educational institutions; 

3. Providing meeting space for local groups and organizations interested in the cultural, 

    recreational and educational development of the citizens of the community. 

 

 

Goals...

 

1. The Library will redesign its interior and exterior spaces to increase library visits and the use of library services.

  • Create comfortable seating areas for readers.
  • Purchase addition public computers.
  • Design a teen area.
  • Create a reading garden
  • Provide improved signage and displays throughout the Library.
  • Investigate an expansion of the Children's Room.
  • Investigate an improved refreshment area.
  • Feature artwork throughout the building and on the grounds.
  • Investigate providing additional points of entry to the building.
  • Create a media area for listening and browsing.
  • Provide improved facilities for cultural and recreational activities.
  • Purchase a self-check to enhance circulation.
  • Investigate the purchase of a large-screen TV for viewing special events, such as important sporting and cultural events. 

 

2. The Library will strive to provide materials in a variety of formats and languages to meet the needs of all patrons. 

  • Provide formal and informal opportunities for patrons to learn how to use the Library's electronic resources including the OPAC and online databases.
  • Monitor circulation statistics to gauge patron interest in particular topics.
  • Continue to make use of available tools for collection development and to order library materials quickly. 
  • Make public aware of the materials that are available to them both in the library and from home.

 

3. The Farmingdale Library will keep abreast of trends in programming to provide programs on topics of high interest for all patrons.

  • Increased intergenerational programming.
  • Increase amount of programming for boys.
  • Provide additional programs on topics of high interest, such as technology and cooking.
  • Provide educational programming.

 

 

4. The Library will communicate with the community to increase awareness of library activities and obtain feedback regarding patron needs. 

 

  • Develop Advisory Councils, such as a Youth Advisory Council, Senior Advisory Council, Art Advisory Council.

  • Play a more active part in other community organizations.

  • Be a source of community information and activities.

  • Investigate improved ways of communicating with the public.

  • Enhance the Library's outreach efforts to groups such as the homebound, nursing homes, and Headstart.

  • Develop additional cooperative activities with local schools and organizations.

 

 

5. The Library will develop and support services and programs to encourage reading in all age groups.

  • Continue Library involvement with Farmingdale Reads and other reading events.
  • Work more closely with the Farmingdale schools, which will enable the Library to support curriculum learning standards and the work of the Farmingdale schools through activities that are appropriate in a public library setting.
  • Develop and support additional reading groups for all ages.
  • Develop the Library's Readers' Advisory service.
  • If the Library purchases a large screen TV, tie in screenings of special sporting and cultural events with materials available at the Library.
